Ruben & Mom Camp 2020 – Day 1; MorningVác

A few weeks ago, I couldn’t even imagine (actually not even a few days ago) that I would really be able to come away for five days and that the two of us could do whatever we wanted during those days. But the rest time finally arrived, and in this short but all the more precious period ahead, we are beginning to recover from the exhaustion of the year so far—not just mine, but Ru’s as well, since let’s not forget that the virus turned children’s lives upside down too.

Unfortunately, Ru didn’t want to go abroad for a vacation and had been away from home so much that he wasn’t in the mood for a bigger domestic trip either. So, since recharging for him means being back in the familiar home environment, our program options were a bit limited. However, we thought of many small activities that would be good for both of us here in the area. And where better to wash off the dust from the roads we have traveled than by the water…?

Thus, the first day of our joint camp led us to Vác, where we spent the morning with Grandma before she took over the apartment I rented for her for a few days as a birthday gift—a little “me-time” (because the virus also turned her life upside down and she sacrificed far more for me than could have been expected). After saying goodbye to Grandma at the train station, the first afternoon together with my kid began just like long ago: just him and me, while the big world buzzed around us…!

Welcome to our little virtual corner! I’m a single mother raising my wonderful son, Ruben, who has grown into a remarkable teenager. For years, I was the sole breadwinner as a Krav Maga instructor, balancing the challenges of parenthood and work on my own. When Ruben started kindergarten, I embarked on a new journey by studying healthcare management at Semmelweis University, specializing in health tourism management. After graduating, I began working in my field and experienced firsthand the tragic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as a healthcare manager in a state hospital. As the pandemic subsided, I transitioned into private healthcare, where I currently work as a practice manager. Meanwhile, our family moved from a small town to Vác, a charming historic Danube riverside city near Budapest. Here, we embrace the everyday moments and joys of life together. If you want to hear more stories about us, you’re warmly invited to visit the original Daysonpaper blog at S&Ru’s Diary on daysonpaper.blog.hu. So I decided to try living for a year on an international stage and see if there are other mothers in similar shoes for whom this diary could be a support on the harder days—just as it has been a support for me when I was able to look beyond the difficulties and sincerely believe in my own strength. Thank you for stopping by!
