It’s been a hectic week, a feeling of spring mixed with the last traces of winter, preparing for the week ahead (assignments, exams, early mornings, late nights), and a Sunday lunch at my parents’ where we all gathered—grandpa, grandma, uncle, and aunt! Of course, it wouldn’t be right to skip playing hide-and-seek on the way there, among the gently budding trees and awakening flowers! Over the weekend, we took the boys to visit a hill in a nearby village—finally, something good came out of the cold! I started a new job this week and didn’t know what to expect, so a lazy Sunday morning by the deep water was definitely welcome. Today, however, I’m already on my third day in the office, and I’m loving everything—the bosses, colleagues, and the coffee included. Over the weekend—like everyone else—we tried to make the most of the cold and, overcoming my fears, we ended up back on the ice of Nyírjes (in my nightmares, I still see the ice breaking and little Ruben plunging in, and I can’t get near the ice sheet for him…). After 10 minutes, the tip of my nose went numb; after 20 minutes, my entire face lost sensation. But Rú absolutely loved the whole atmosphere, so for an hour I tried to keep every muscle and joint flexible to not spoil the fun. After an hour, the laws of physiology won, and despite all the fidgeting, we started to stiffen…

The day before yesterday, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked out the window and saw everything covered in snow! I woke Rú up, and we just leaned on the window, kneeling on the bed, half wrapped in blankets, wondering: if all this were powdered sugar, where would we even start devouring the town? But the daily routine forced us to snap out of our amazement. Rú had kindergarten, I had an exam, and we were still in our pajamas. While sipping cocoa, we decided we couldn’t let such a special morning go to waste, so we hurried through our morning preparations a bit to make sure that before…

I had never been this exhausted before Christmas, but when we got home with Rú and settled into the kitchen, it was like we were both transformed! Out came the Christmas plates, baking molds, colorful sugars, and we dove into a sweet delight: pouring chocolate! It was supposed to be a little bag of treats for the gifts we’re giving, but now I’m not so sure everyone will get one. The chocolate base was already being nibbled on as it started its task, and somehow the melted chocolate kept disappearing during the making; not to mention the decorated cookies… (: Dated: Jan 5, 2017

It’s amazing how the holidays can make us forget the hustle and bustle of everyday worries and tasks each evening! At home, there’s warmth and scent in the air, standing by the door waiting hopefully to catch a glimpse of Santa… It’s easy to forget how much these moments can leave their mark on the winter season. There is this belief among Native Americans that a photograph can steal one’s soul. It feels like ours were exactly summoned out by the photos: a few weeks ago, we collaborated with a fellow parent and friend (who happens to be a professional photographer) to capture an hour of our existence—just the two of us with the golden-haired one. In my younger days, I was often photographed, and I approached this meeting in Csesztve with mixed feelings. But knowing Dominika, I trusted that the collaboration would also be fun, even though for me, these things always feel a bit like work. We arrived just as the sun broke through after…

Despite my many shoes, I somehow always manage to fit them all, and I’m not really tempted much by shoe stores. But every now and then, my eye catches something, and I feel like it exists just because of me! That happened with my latest hiking boots, and after the first few moments of melting into them post-delivery, it turned out something even better came with them: the box! Right before a week full of university consultations (including a short quiz and three pre-exams for a recommended grade…), what else could a mom do on a Sunday morning… … but turn a cardboard box into a car!!! All in line…
