A long day, starting with a good breakfast!

    2025.06.02. /

I won’t be able to write too much—I can barely stand. We got up early, which actually worked in my favor because today was the deadline to submit my final paper for the hospital internship. It had to be handed in as a physical copy at the department (don’t ask me why there wasn’t a digital option in the 21st century). Since I was already up, I also squeezed in a workout I’d been putting off for a long time. I had been looking forward to this day because I had taken Ruben out of kindergarten for the day so we could spend this Friday together—just like old times, just…

    May Day

    2025.06.02. /

This year, Ruben spent May 1st at the archery range (and took first place!), so we celebrated our May Day the day before along the Danube promenade in Vác. Basically, we just lay in the grass, walked our hundred-legged friend on our hands, played story dice, and read books. When Ruben got more energetic, we headed into the vendors’ area for a big bowl of strawberries, which we happily devoured while lounging in the grass. (: I wouldn’t trade these peaceful days for anything—especially now, at the start of exam season… Dated: May 3, 2018

    Ruben & Mom Day

    2025.06.02. /

A few weeks ago, Ruben and I decided to skip kindergarten for a day and have a special mom-and-son day! We set off to spend the day watching movies, visiting a toy store, and enjoying frozen yogurt—just the two of us. I loved every moment! At the same time, I sadly realized that the time has come when my son helps carry the heavy shopping bags and sometimes asks if I’m tired yet… He’s almost turning six, and I’m beginning to understand that there’s nothing I can do to stop him from growing up for good. ISZN (Literary and Drama Days) 2018.

    2025.06.02. /

As you know, you all know how much I love the theater, and I’m happy to share that this year is an ISZN year again in Balassagyarmat! This is a literary and drama gathering held every other year for amateur theater groups, where actors perform up close—just an arm’s length away from the audience (and the professional jury). From Friday to Sunday on a February weekend, about 10 plays are performed by amateur artists from all over the country, and even from across the border. I’ve been following the festival since I was a high school girl, then as a young adult, a pregnant mom, and now for the second…

Walnut Praline & Candied Cinnamon-Salted Hazelnuts

    2025.06.02. /

This morning, we dove into making some mouthwatering treats with the little one, which ended up with two different results… I have to admit, the walnut praline actually started as just candied walnuts, but I mismeasured the amount of water (we carefully measured drop by drop with Ruben, but somehow the scale was off). Still, it wasn’t a loss: in the end, we created a magnificent praline with our golden-haired helper, who cheered us on the whole time! ‹3 On the other hand, we started the salted hazelnuts with precise care, and while the praline took about half an hour, the second batch—salted hazelnuts—was ready in just 10 minutes! Maybe…

    Baking Coconut Cake

    2025.06.02. /

For days now, we’ve been eagerly waiting for the weekend when we could finally start baking a coconut birthday cake for a dear friend with our golden-haired little helper! The idea for the cake’s flavor came from the latest episode of Dora and Friends, where the characters were chasing after coconuts and getting into all sorts of adventures—perfect inspiration for the cake. Ruben had never actually eaten real coconut before, so on Friday we went to get one (in this small countryside town, I found coconut only in one single place!) and got started on processing it: We didn’t follow this exact recipe, but I wish we had, because I wasn’t…

    Halloween, 2017.

    2025.06.02. /

Halloween is a bit of a mixed bag here—although it’s a real phenomenon, not everyone in Hungary pays attention to it. But just try to ignore it when you have a little one around… haha 😀 The story goes that on October 23rd, Ruben turned six months old, and that weekend, I gathered the family for a small celebration to mark our little one’s half-year milestone. That weekend happened to fall right on All Hallows’ Eve, so naturally, we embraced the skeletons, ghosts, and all the spooky fun that comes with it. From that moment, it became a tradition, and over the years, we’ve perfected our celebration of the “gate…

    Pick-Your-Own Apple Orchard in Berkenye

    2025.06.02. /

I’d like to share with you the highlights of our Sunday trip—at least the morning part; the afternoon adventures will have to wait for next time—which we spent at the pick-your-own apple orchard in Berkenye! For weeks, we’d been talking about how fun it would be to pick sun-warmed, juicy, “lipstick-red” apples straight from the orchard for a pie. But until Sunday, our weekends had been fully booked with other plans. This time, however, we decided to spread out the housework over the weekdays (not the best decision, considering it’s only Tuesday now…!) and drove off to Berkenye, the unofficial fruit paradise. The weather was on our side, so we…

    Five-year-old joy archer

    2025.06.02. /

I just can’t help but brag about this topic, because it’s so rare for a child’s talent to shine through so clearly by the age of three—in something they’re truly good at. And not just measurable by results (though those are definitely impressive too (: ), but also in balance, diligence, calmness, and fulfillment—without which, what would it all be worth? Although I don’t know much about archery myself, I can see how much this sport continues to build Ruben up. You all know he has his own personality, opinions, determination, and attachment to the things that matter to him—but we mustn’t forget he’s still just a five-year-old. And as…

Lemon Bugs and Giant LEGO Gingerbread Man! (+Recipe)

    2025.06.02. /

One of Our Summer Friday Afternoon Bakes:  Finally Unveiling the Giant LEGO Man! This silicone cake mold has quickly become one of my favorites (right after the life-sized LEGO figure ice cube tray, which we also used to make the birthday chocolate LEGO figures). I can almost smell the lemony cake batter, which is perfect on any summer day paired with homemade black forest lemonade! What you’ll need: How to make it: Beat the margarine and sugar until fluffy, then add the vanilla and eggs and continue mixing. Combine the flour with the baking powder and your chosen flavoring, then gently fold into the wet mixture. Bake at 190°C (375°F)…

About Us

Welcome to our little virtual corner! I’ve been running this blog on a small platform for 9 years, and now I’ve ventured out into the open waters with it for a year. I was a single mother raising my wonderful son, Ruben, who has grown into a remarkable teenager. For years, I was the sole breadwinner as a Krav Maga instructor, balancing the challenges of parenthood and work on my own.

When Ruben started kindergarten, I embarked on a new journey by studying healthcare management at Semmelweis University, specializing in health tourism management. After graduating, I began working in my field and experienced firsthand the tragic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as a healthcare manager in a state hospital.

As the pandemic subsided, I transitioned into private healthcare, where I worked as a practice manager. Meanwhile, our family moved from a small town to Vác, a charming historic Danube riverside city near Budapest. Later, I took on a new role at the Department of Health within the Ministry of Interior, continuing my journey in the healthcare field from a different perspective. Life has also grown in beautiful new ways: a wonderful partner has brought fresh energy and warmth into what was once just me and Rú—now we’re a family of three.

Here, we embrace the everyday moments and joys of life together. If you want to hear more stories about us, you’re warmly invited to visit the original Daysonpaper blog at S&Ru’s Diary on daysonpaper.blog.hu.

So I decided to try living for a year on an international stage and see if there are other mothers in similar shoes for whom this diary could be a support on the harder days—just as it has been a support for me when I was able to look beyond the difficulties and sincerely believe in my own strength.

Thank you for stopping by!
